What's needed to run BlueSky locally.

Operating System

In theory, BlueSky should run on any POSIX-compliant operating system.  However, only the following operating systems are officially supported:

  • Linux 2.6.25 with glibc 2.8 (Fedora Core 9) on x86 (32-bit)
  • Linux 2.6.24 with glibc 2.7 (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS) on x86 (32-bit)
  • Linux 2.6.24 with glibc 2.7 (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS) on x86-64 (64-bit)

In general, our goal is to support the latest long-term supported releases of Ubuntu Linux (or compatible distributions) and Red Hat Linux (or compatible distributions).

If you are interested in running the BlueSky Framework on another system, please contact the BlueSky team.

Minimum system requirements

  • Processor: i686 (e.g. Pentium II) or better CPU
  • Memory: 512 MB minimum; 1 GB recommended
  • Disk space: 500 MB (required to install the framework)
  • Scratch space: 4+ GB of working disk space recommended
  • Internet connection recommended (for downloading fire information from SMARTFIRE)

Note: the binary distribution of the BlueSky Framework should contain all required libraries for the framework to run.  No other packages should need to be installed.  However, in the past, some problems could be resolved by installing the PROJ.4 projection library (package proj-devel or proj-dev).  Also, some users have reported problems if there is a mismatch between the version of certain compiler libraries (notably libgfortran) on your system and the version used to build the framework.  If you find this to be the case, please contact us so we can assist you.
